SCANLAB distinguishes between analog and digital position detectors.

Analog position detectors are typically optical and utilize a cost-efficient detection method. Analog position detectors are built into all standard scan heads, as well as the II and III systems.

Digital position detectors possess superior characteristics with respect to precision, long-term stability and dynamics and therefore fulfill even the most challenging industrial requirements. Digital position detectors are used in the de and se systems.
